I Tried It: This Air Fryer Has a Mode to Remove Greasy, Gunky Buildup

After hundreds of hours of testing air fryers, these powerful countertop ovens have proved to be a worthy addition to your kitchen and not a passing fad. The compact cookers deliver the crunch of fried food without the excess calories, added oil and with little cleanup. But with enough use, gunk inevitably builds up in parts of the air fryer basket and on the cooking mechanism above.

If left unchecked, that greasy buildup can taint food flavor and become a fire hazard. Even the most vigorous session with a tough sponge or scrubbing pad doesn’t always do the trick, which is why semi-regular deep cleaning goes a long way toward preserving your air fryer’s smooth operation and cleanliness.

Typhur’s latest Dome 2 Air Fryer has some features we don’t typically see on air fryers and one of them is meant to keep that air fryer interior gunk-free. The space-age-looking cooker has a self-cleaning cycle and top-and-bottom cooking elements — unique features among the air fryers we’ve tested.

Typhur Dome 2

Like

  • Self-cleaning cycle works

  • All of the lingering oil was completely gone

  • One quick wipe of the condensation revealed a clean and smooth surface

  • Has heating elements on both top and bottom

  • Digital interface makes every action a breeze, including whether or not you want the clean to be regular or deep

  • Air fryer has big power

  • Large enough basket to fit a 12-inch pizza

Don’t like

  • The cleaning cycle takes an hour alone, and anyone impatient may opt to just scrub the device themselves

  • Self-cleaning only targets oil stains and not crumbs

  • It’s one of the most expensive air fryers we’ve tested

  • Shallow air fryer basket is limiting for some foods

The nearly $400 unit — admittedly pricey for an air fryer — can fit an entire 12-inch pizza and easily reaches 400 degrees to crisp your favorite foods in minutes, but we hauled one in specifically to evaluate its self-cleaning feature.

Here’s how the Typhur Dome 2 fared in testing.

What Is the Typhur Dome 2 Air Fryer?

Typhur’s best-selling, ultra-quiet Dome 2 air fryer was inspired by professional pizza ovens and features 360-degree heating. While you can certainly use it to heat up an entire pie, its airflow and circulation will cook practically anything, saving amateur chefs approximately 30 percent of the time they would spend in an oven, on a grill, or in a skillet. It will also shut off automatically if it begins to overheat, making it one of the safer options on the market.

In addition to dual NTC sensors that maintain precise temperature control, the device touts 15 versatile presets to accommodate everything from toasting and roasting to broiling and even dehydrating. There is also a preheat mode to accommodate items that may be inserted while still frozen, including steak, fish, and vegetables.

Typhur Dome heats from the top and bottom, unlike most air fryers

Dual heating elements (which heat from the top and bottom to eliminate mid-cooking shaking or flipping) make cooking more even (and faster). Most air fryers only have heating elements positioned above, giving the Dome a 360-degree advantage over the competition.

The Typhur app offers custom cooking programs, remote control settings, cooking alerts, access to recipes and real-time temperature and time adjustments. Last but certainly not least is its self-cleaning ability — yet another feature that sets it apart from practically every other air fryer.

How does the self-cleaning feature work?

An air fryer industry first, the Dome 2’s self-cleaning feature decomposes grease and grime from the top cavity with high heat (which, in turn, transforms the sticky mess into water vapor and carbon dioxide). This means you won’t need soap, water, or a sponge to buff out those difficult-to-remove stains after multiple uses.

Typhur recommends using the self-cleaning mode once a month, either for a regular or a deeper clean, depending on the severity of the residue.

The verdict

As an air fryer, the Dome 2 worked well. I tested everything from frozen fries and asparagus to homemade chicken nuggets and salmon, all of which were cooked to perfection and without any snafus. I also appreciated its oversized basket and ability to cook thoroughly and consistently. It can truly do it all, which is exciting for those like me who often don’t have the time or energy to make labor-intensive dinners.

To test the sselc–cleaning mode, I smeared barbecue sauce on the coils above and did my best to bake them in. A truly filthy, caked-on air fryer takes time, but this was the best I could do with a limited window. For what I asked of it, the model’s self-cleaning mode worked effectively, though it has a couple of drawbacks that will likely be eliminated as technology improves.

Self-cleaning feature:

Liked:

  • It works! All of the lingering oil was completely gone. One quick wipe of the condensation revealed a clean and smooth surface.
  • It also helped remove caked-on barbecue sauce that was smeared on the heating coils above.
  • It could not be easier to use. The digital interface makes every action a breeze, including choosing between regular and deep cleaning.
  • I was fearful of a lingering smell, but there was no trace of a foul odor.

Disliked:

  • It takes a while to do the job. The normal cleaning mode is an hour alone and anyone impatient may opt to just scrub the device themselves.
  • Self-cleaning only targets oil stains and not crumbs. While anyone should wipe down their machine after every use, the accumulation of crumbs can be the most annoying to remove. I’ll be looking forward to the day when an appliance can do this.

As a self-proclaimed air fryer aficionado, I was thoroughly impressed with the Typhur Dome 2.  In fact, it has officially replaced my go-to, pre-existing model, especially on Sundays when I meal prep for the first half of my week. While it seems that most kitchen essentials have either stalled in their adoption of advanced technology or pivoted entirely to AI-assisted capabilities, it’s exciting to see a popular device re-emerge in a new and improved form.
