Cooling capacity and room size
The BTU rating and room size go hand in hand when determining which window unit you need. An undersized unit may run continuously, never efficiently cooling a room. The square footage of the room you want to cool will determine what BTU rating you will need. An online BTU calculator can help you make the determination.
For a small to medium-sized room, we recommend the 8,000-BTU Windmill. For a large room, we recommend the 10,000- or 14,000-BTU LG Dual Inverter.
Energy efficiency
Some modern window AC units, such as the Windmill, feature advanced technology that automatically adjusts cooling output to conserve energy, resulting in lower electricity use. The design of the Midea U-Shaped unit can further improve efficiency by lessening air leakage around the window opening. Eco modes and Energy Star certifications can provide further energy savings.
Window compatibility and installation
Before deciding on a window unit, confirm that you have a compatible window type, such as a single- or double-hung window. You should also ensure that your window is wide and tall enough for the unit you’re considering. If you don’t have any compatible windows in the room you want to cool, you may want to consider a portable AC.
Electrical requirements
You’ll want to install the unit near a wall outlet. Although AC units don’t have a heating element, it is still not recommended to use extension cords with window AC units. All our recommended AC units operate on a standard home wall outlet.
Noise level
Some people enjoy the white noise a fan can provide, but if you prefer a quieter room, noise level is important to consider when choosing an AC unit, especially if you plan to have one in your bedroom. The LG Dual Inverter is the quietest option on our list, according to decibel readings from retailers.
Smart features
While all of our picks come with a physical remote control, some offer additional smart features such as Wi-Fi app control, scheduling and voice assistant options. If smart home compatibility is a priority for you, the Midea U-Shaped model has the most options for integrating it into a smart home setup.
