Out of all the security cam devices I test, Arlo is my pick for sheer design. The company can’t be beat when it comes to premier, sturdy products with high-quality materials designed to last for years and avoid damage. (I’ve thrown more than a few cameras off my roof to find out.) I’ve also never seen a video doorbell for as low a price as Arlo’s 2nd-gen doorbell, available on Amazon Prime Day for under $30.
Video doorbells are made to sit by your front door and watch who comes close. With Arlo’s 2K resolution, you’ll also have enough detail to see across your front yard or driveway, which could take the place of a traditional security camera. This particular doorbell can be wireless or wired into your previous doorbell spot, but I greatly prefer wireless models because the old wired location doesn’t always work for video, so this gives you many more options.
Arlo’s app is also top-notch, letting you customize what you want to see, what you can get alerts about and where you want motion zones to improve privacy and cut down on unnecessary alerts. Like all video doorbells, it offers two-way audio to talk to strangers no matter where you are.
Speaking of alerts, you will need an Arlo Secure plan, starting at $10 per month, to unlock useful object recognition — like getting an alert for when a package shows up — which is one of the greatest benefits of a video doorbell. For Arlo, this subscription is particularly important because it also enables cloud video storage and a unique early warning detection system that can watch for wildfires, listen for breaking glass or barking dogs and even look for customized objects. You also get object replacement if a porch pirate makes off with the doorbell, too.
