My Favorite Protein-Packed Air Fryer Snack Costs Less Than a Dollar to Make

Forget the sad, mushy chickpeas you’ve been tossing into your salads. You aren’t living until you’ve turned them into a legitimate snack. I’ve always put chickpeas in the same category as potatoes. They taste great and work in just about any dish. But if you want to give them some real substance and personality, you’ve got to stop boiling them and start air frying them.

The air fryer. is the undisputed king for accomplishing this, as it delivers a level of crunch that a standard oven just can’t touch. But don’t just dump a wet can of beans into the basket and expect magic. If you want that perfect crispy, crunch texture, the chickpeas have to be bone dry. Toss them in a salad spinner or let them dry on a paper towel until there’s not a drop of moisture left.

This is the ultimate “inflation-proof” snack hack because a can of chickpeas still costs less than a buck. With a tiny drizzle of oil and whatever spices are currently in your pantry, you can create a high-protein snack that you’ll actually enjoy eating. It’s fast, it’s dirt cheap and it’s more addictive than popcorn. Find the complete recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can chickpeas/garbanzo beans 
  • 1 tbsp olive oil 
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder 
  • 1/4 tsp paprika 
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1/8 tsp harissa 
  • A dash of garlic powder, salt and pepper

How to make air fryer chickpeas: 

Step 1: Drain and rinse the chickpeas, then use a salad spinner as described above to dry them.

Step 2: Place the dried chickpeas in a medium-sized bowl and toss them with olive oil then your spices until they’re fully coated and have a slightly red tint.

Step 3: Place the prepared chickpeas in a parchment-lined air fryer in a single layer.

Step 4: Cook them at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes or until they are golden brown, shaking the air fryer basket halfway through the cooking time. After 10 minutes, check to ensure they are your desired crispiness. If you want them crispier, place them back in the air fryer for 2 minutes at a time.

Step 5: When the chickpeas are done cooking, serve them by themselves as a snack, on a salad or with a roasted vegetable on the side.
