Libre’s New AI App Feature Helps People With Diabetes Make Food Decisions Before They Take a Bite

When you prepare food at home or eat out at a restaurant, it can be challenging to determine the nutrition facts just by looking at your meal. This can be especially concerning if you have a medical condition like diabetes that is constantly affected by what you eat. To eliminate this guesswork, health care company Abbott, creator of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), just launched its Libre Assist app feature at CES 2026.

Located within the Libre app’s Insights tab, Libre Assist utilizes generative AI to help individuals with diabetes understand how their food might impact their glucose levels before they even eat it. All they have to do is snap a photo or write a description of their meal, and the AI algorithm will identify the ingredients, predict their glucose impact based on user-provided food data and display a color-coded rating of said impact: green for minor, yellow for moderate and orange for major.

Libre Assist will also provide users with meal tips to minimize the potential impact on their glucose levels. For instance, instead of flavored Greek yogurt, it may suggest that you eat plain. This is all based on food preferences you can input into the app.

If you already use the FreeStyle Libre CGM, this has been integrated into the new feature. After eating, Libre Assist will use your glucose data from the CGM to share how your food actually impacted your glucose levels. This may differ from Assist’s predictions based on non-food factors such as your activity level, stress, medication and alcohol consumption.

Now available, Libre Assist is free within the Libre app. Please note that generative AI may not always be accurate, so it should not be used as a substitute for professional medical treatment.
