How a New Fridge With Built-In Barcode Scanner Could Change Grocery Shopping Forever

Keeping a mental list of the groceries you’re running low on is a weekly battle. The new smart fridge from GE Profile, announced ahead of CES 2026, aims to take the guesswork out of your next trip to the supermarket.

The brand has introduced an AI-powered refrigerator that could transform the all-important kitchen cold storage space into an intelligent assistant, featuring a built-in scanner to manage your grocery list, a smart hub for suggesting recipes, and a live camera feed designed to eliminate overbuying and reduce food waste.

A first-ever built-in food scanner keeps tabs on your supplies

At the heart of GE Profile’s Smart 4-Door French-Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant (27.9 cubic feet) is a barcode scanner built into the exterior of the refrigerator’s water and ice dispenser. When you’re running low on milk, eggs or any other item, simply scan the barcode and the refrigerator automatically adds it to a digital grocery list in the SmartHQ app, complete with brand, flavor and size.

Currently, the system recognizes over four million products, and the shopping list can be shared with household members, referenced during in-store visits, or synced directly with Instacart for delivery. For items without barcodes, users can add them through voice commands or text input on the refrigerator’s display or via the app.

“We’re creating intuitive experiences that feel natural and effortless, turning the refrigerator into a true kitchen companion that evolves with families over time,” said Jason May, executive product director of French-door refrigeration at GE Appliances.

A camera lets you check on rations

The refrigerator also features FridgeFocus, a camera system embedded in an LED bar that captures real-time images of the drawers. Household members can check what’s in the fridge while shopping, helping prevent duplicate purchases.

More than cold storage, the fridge is a home hub

The 8-inch touchscreen display serves as a command center for the kitchen, offering weather updates, customizable backgrounds and access to recipes from partners like Taste of Home. New recipes are added monthly through regular software updates.

Voice controls enable hands-free operation, allowing you to add items to a list, convert measurements or look up product information. The dispenser features sensor technology for hands-free water filling, offering options for automatic filling or precise measurement.

Availability and pricing

The GE Profile Smart 4-Door French-Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant will be available in both standard-depth and counter-depth models starting in April 2026.

The refrigerator is priced at $4,899 and will be sold through geappliances.com and select retailers nationwide. It is available in fingerprint-resistant stainless steel and features door-in-door storage, an adjustable temperature drawer and LED lighting.
