Do you just not like how those flat chiclet laptop keyboards feel when you’re typing away? Yeah, me neither. That’s why I prefer mechanical keyboards, and I have been using them for a few years. Though there are many brands out there, one of my favorites is Keychron because they’re classic-looking, relatively affordable, feel great to type on and are customizable. Plus, they have a lot of wireless options, if you don’t like dealing with cables on your desk.

For the Amazon Spring Sale, you can grab the Keychron K2 Max Bluetooth Wireless Mechanical Keyboard for just $92, which is $23 off the standard $115 price. And there’s also a promo code (KEYCHRONTEN) that you can use to get even more savings.

The Keychron K2 Max is a 75% layout keyboard, which means you won’t have a numpad. If you aren’t dealing with numbers all day, then this should honestly be fine. I personally prefer smaller keyboards because I don’t have to type numbers all day long, and it saves more space on the desk.

When you look at the Keychron K2 Max, you’ll see three options: super brown, super banana and super red switches. The switch types are all different and affect the sound level and feel when you type. Reds are linear and incredibly smooth and quiet, requiring the least actuation force; typically, these are best for gaming. Browns are tactile, which is an in-between option that’s still pretty quiet but have a satisfying tactile bump. The last is clicky, which is the loudest and typically need the most pressure to activate. If you’re new to mechanical keyboards, some further research may be required to figure out which type of switch you prefer. I personally like tactile ones.

The Keychron K2 Max is also Bluetooth compatible, so you don’t even need a cable to use it with your computer. It works with Mac, Windows, and even iOS and Android. The keyboard can be paired with up to three devices, and switching between them just requires switching the toggle to which one you need. Keychron keyboards typically ship with Mac keys, but it does include Windows keycaps (along with the necessary tools) to switch them out.

There’s RGB backlighting on the Keychron K2 Max, with multiple options to cycle through. This adds a fun touch to your desk setup. The keyboard is also compatible with QMK firmware, which means it’s completely customizable by the owner for key remapping, macros and even shortcuts.

Since this is a wireless keyboard, it has a 4,000-mAh battery inside. A single full charge should last up to 190 hours without the backlight or 100 hours on the lowest brightness. Another option is to use it plugged in, which can be done if you don’t plan to use it with multiple devices and won’t need to worry about charging.

And like every other mechanical keyboard, the Keychron K2 Max is also customizable with the keycaps, so it should be compatible with most keycap sets on the market. This is a whole rabbit hole that you can dive into if you feel inclined.

Why this deal matters

Mechanical keyboards really took off during the pandemic, but have since slowed down a bit. Still, it’s a popular hobby for many, and honestly, mechanical keyboards just feel better to type on. Keychron is one of my preferred brands of keyboards because they’re sturdy, reliable, affordable and work with Macs. At just $92, this is a great deal, especially if you’re looking to get into the world of customizable mechanical keyboards.
